Maurkel - Arcane Mage (Declined) Empty Maurkel - Arcane Mage (Declined)

Post  Maurkel Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:24 am

General information:

Characters name: Maurkel
Class: Mage
Race: Draenei
Armory link: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Ghostlands&n=Maurkel
UI screenshot: https://2img.net/r/ihimizer/img18/1372/wowscrnshot083109164820.jpg
Played Time on your character: 40 Days roughly
Professions and level of professions: 455 Jewelcrafting / 450 Mining
Do you have a stable internet connection (Yes/No and average MS in raids):

My internet connection is very stable and I have never been disconnected mid-raid, but sometimes my internet can go a bit laggy at times, why exactly I do not know. I have about an average of 80-150 MS in raids, but it's never unbearable.

What other characters do you have?

Arten - LVL 65 Tauren Death Knight (Mostly experimental)

Raid times and Experience:

My previous raid times have been from around 20:00 Server time to about 23:00 Server time. I've cleared every raid pre - Ulduar both on 10 and 25 with the exclusion of the Eye of Eternity (Mainly because my previous guilds have never been to fond of it (Only done it on 10 man)), and have done Obsidian Sanctum 25 with 1 Drake up. I've done up to Mimiron on 10 man Ulduar and have rarely set foot into the 25 man version of Ulduar mainly because my guild never got around to doing it.

We raid 7 days a week, days and times could possibly change in the future, please delete yes or no below depending on whether you would be able to attend or not. (server times)
Monday 19:30-00:00 - No
Tuesday 19:30-00:00 - Yes
Wednesday 19:30-00:00 - No
Thursday 19:30-00:00 - Yes
Friday 19:30-1:00 - Yes
Saturday 19:30-1:00 - Yes
Sunday 19:30-23:00 - Yes

Do you have pre-WotLK raiding experience, if so what?

Unfortunately, I do not have any previous raiding experience, mainly because I was still levelling during the Burning Crusade and only really made my efforts to get to end-game during WotLK.

What 10 man and 25 man Ulduar bosses have you cleared and of which out of those bosses have you done on hard mode?

I have done all of the Siege of Ulduar, the Antechamber and all of the Keepers apart from Mimiron on 10 man. That said, I do know the tactics for Vezzax and Yogg-Saron and know the majority of hard modes. With Ulduar 25, I never really raided there mainly because my guilds have never been up for it. I do know the boss fights in the 25 man version, but not the hard modes. One thing I must point out is that I am an extremely fast learner, and always ask a question if I'm unsure about my role in the fight, or what needs to be done.

Character specific questions:

Explain your current gear choices and how you hope to improve then in the future.

My current gear choices right now are:

Spell Power
Haste
Crit
Spirit / Intelligence
Hit

Now, it may seem rather peculiar to have hit at the bottom of my list, and that is because I have an over abundance of hit right now, due to the fact that after picking up odd upgrades from Trial of the Champion, it's given me an overkill amount of hit. After reaching 10% haste (Which I am currently at 9.73% as of writing) I plan to boost my crit, while still maintaining 10% haste, which would be interesting to see how it will work out. Spellpower is at the top of my list because it rather obviously boosts my damage with spells. Spirit and Intelligence are rather low on my list because I feel that I usually have too much mana, and my mana regen seems about right. Of course, with the upcoming changes to the Arcane spec in 3.2.2, it has made me rather excited to see how my DPS will turn out and what my DPM Tradeoff will be.

Comment on how youve chosen to gem and enchant your character, and why you have chosen these gems/enchants.

My current gemming has really been to try and achieve the maximum amount of Spell Power without completely disregarding slot colours, and also trying to reach my aforementioned 10% haste target. I have two purple gems for the sole purpose of having my Meta gem active (What's the point of having a Meta if it doesn't work?), but not just gemming completely for Spirit.

My enchants have been chosen mainly through what other mages and character auditors have recommended to me, whilst also looking at alternatives and deciding for myself what would be the best enchant and what stats I need to really focus on.

What glyphs are you using and why?

My glyphs are mainly to increase my DPS but also gain the full effect of Mage Armor with the added bonus of mana regeneration. Minor glyphs have mainly been just utility and fun glyphs, with the exception of the Glyph of Arcane Intellect, which gives a 50% mana discount on mana costs for Arcane Intellect and Brilliance.

Do you have any notable offspec gear and are you experience/up to date with the mechanics of playing your offspecs?

Well, I do have an offspec, but with the extremely limited selection of options that a mage can become, all it amounts to in the end is just a PvP spec. Recently, with no raids happening, I have turned to PvP as a source of enjoyment, and have become strangely good at it, although never taking it seriously. What this really means is that I only have one real raiding spec, and the other as a fun spec, but with DPS as your only option, there is a rather large cap on your creativity.

We require you to have at least one crafting profession (not engineering). If you have two gathering professions, would you be prepared to reroll one?

As mentioned before, I have maxed out Jewelcrafting only recently and have immediately started learning new epic gem recipes, starting with ones that will benefit me the most, and then I will decide to expand to gems that will benefit non-casters in the guild.

General questions

Previous guilds and reasons for leaving?

(My first guild, unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it)
Eternal Twilight
Legacy

My main problem is that these guilds have never been very keen on raiding at the high end of the spectrum, and take a much more laid back approach to it, which I appreciate, but can also get extremely annoying once the cycle of doing dailies and then realising there isn't going to be a raid that night really does start to grate on the nerves.

What role do you feel you provide in a raid and what areas of strengths do you feel your class and spec has over others?

One thing I guess my class has that not many others do is the sustained DPS during boss fights. Also, with the convenient tool of mage tables, and a raid-wide buff. I also have Focus Magic , which adds a helpful 3% crit rating to the target, and adds an additional 3% of crit back to me if the target crits with a spell. I also have Slow, which can slow down target's attack speeds and movement speeds, and also help with Torment the Weak, which adds 12% extra damage on top of all of my main nuking spells. Spell-steal is another great perk, which helped other guilds out on fights like Thorim, where the buffs had been spell-stolen to give rather overpowered perks for a short time.

What 1 thing would you change about your class if you could?

It would be interesting to see mages become more flexible in the way you can approach the end-game raiding scene, without having to stay Arcane or Fire (Or now Frostfire, which I have never experimented with), and can have more fun with specs such as Frost, or an odd mix of two different trees. As it stands, there isn't much in the way of customization, but then again, there rarely is in a min/maxing situation.

What do you think you can add to Eternals?

Apart from being an extremely skilled player of my class, and being extremely knowledgable of it, I have a great sense of humor, which probably doesn't show much in this post, as I'd much rather keep things formal for the sake of not sounding like a kid, and am generally very talkative and social. People from my old guilds have always enjoyed having me around as I can always get lively discussions started and sort out problems between members.

What do you think Eternals can do for you?

Well I do expect a group of dedicated players who know and understand their classes and roles in a raid, and are very able in taking on new encounters and are generally good people whether it be in a social aspect or a raiding aspect.

Personal information; Name, age, where you live, interests/hobbies, Job and family that will nag you to stop raiding?

My name is Amro, and believe it or not, I am 14. I live in London in the UK, and take an interest in economics, politics and ofcourse, gaming. I don't have a job, but my family can be a hurdle to overcome on random days. With this kept in mind, I might have to leave raids early because of family, or unexpected events, although this doesn't happen often, there is always that threat, if you will, that could end in me having to leave early.

Additional information which you would like to name?

I am a gamer at heart, and after playing many reflex game such as Guitar Hero and Elite Beat Agents, to games like Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3, all of which I do excellent at (My Gamertag on my Xbox360 is The Panda Ninja, if you want to check that up), and when it comes to World of Warcraft, most bosses will have little to no challenge in the reflex or timing department. I also want to note, that despite my age, I am a much more mature gamer than your average 14 year old. I also learn new things extremely quickly, so new encounters will usually be done with no hassle.

I would also like to note, that even though I have rarely ever stepped foot in the 25 Man version of Ulduar, or Trial of the Crusader 10 man, character auditors and a general feeling both tell me that I could perform well in Ulduar 25 Hard modes and also Trial of the Champion 10 man. I've checked on both Be Imba and WoW-Heroes.

I guess there isn't a reason in particular, besides that I might want to have a rest or do things outside of WoW, but usually I'm not active on Mondays or Wednesdays, but if I am, I don't see a problem with inviting me to a raid if I'm online and have the time to go. Thing is, I don't really have a schedule for these kinds of things, so some days I'll be on, sometimes I won't, I'm not trying to sound like I want getting my own way or something, it's just that I can't really make a schedule with the dynamic nature of my family, if you understand what I'm getting at here.

Oh, I just remembered to mention that I don't normally use a Medallion of the Alliance, it's just a PvP thing. Also, I apologise in advance if you can't see my Arcane Spec and stats if for whatever reason I'm in Frost.

Hey, two things.
Firstly with your ui, you seen to have the biggest action bar EU slap bang in the middle of your screen, to me this looks like it could impare your vision of things such as void zones and other various bad things you shouldnt stand in. what is the reason for that bar?
Next (at this risk of pissing off some of our mages) why are you playing arcane currently rather than fire, which aswell as adding a raid debuff, is considered a higher dps spec than arcane in the current patch.

If I'm honest I feel the "dynamic" nature of your family is because of your age. It's one reason guilds tend to recruit older people. It's not a detriment to you personally but for example, I'm an adult (most of the time), I wish to raid wednesday, what would stop me? But for you, you have many things that can stop you, family, friends, puberty, homework. Ultimatly there is less stability in younger peoples lives because they don't control so much of it.

We have a 4 night raiding minimum that should be aimmed for, by denying monday and wednesday, you are cutting yourself from alot of raids where it might be neccesary for you. Wednesday is predominatly a "gearing up" night with alot of clearing happening and monday is right in the middle of progress time. Given this information, do you still wish to be considered?

We do need mages, and DPS who are competent and active. Can you and do you want to fulfill it? It takes commitment that no one would blame a 14 year old for not wanting.

Post  Subeam Mon Aug 31, 2009 5:09 pm

Nice app Smile Few tiny things i wonder about, though. Can you explain why you chose to put 1 talent point in Arcane Stability? Slow is a nice spell to have, i totally agree, but if there's others in the raid who can provide the snare and slowing effect, where would you put the point into instead?
And out of curiosity, what's your mana regen with mage armor up, with the glyph, in a raid setting? As last i checked, mana regen can't be more than 100% and in a normal raid setup you'd have 100% unglyphed. If that's still the case, it leaves the mage armor glyph useless (not to mention the so-called arcane mage intended part of the T9 2set bonus), especially as you mention not having any mana problems, only the problem of getting rid of it fast enough. ^^
Any particular reason btw for the goal of 10% haste and then focussing on crit? I'm curious why that particular number.

Also, do you have experience with playing fire? Ronab does have a point there (QQ), but i blame Blizz and demand they fix it. Properly! Wink
Good luck. Smile

edit: Looking at your gems, there's a few you might want to consider changing. Hit as a socketbonus when already plenty over hitcap isn't adding any dps, so shouldn't be filled with a matching colour when the colour isn't red, imo Wink

Maurkel - Arcane Mage (Declined) Empty Re: Maurkel - Arcane Mage (Declined)

Post  Maurkel Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:07 pm

Well, starting with Ronab:

I have never had such problems before standing out of Void Zones, and am always active and alert during raid encounters, I guess the main reason it's so big is to remind me of important spells and to get some urgent spells out, such as Aggro wipes (Invisibilty or Ice Block (In one way or another)). I guess it can be shrunk down and tinkering with my UI has never been a problem, so I guess I could remap some of my spells elsewhere on the UI.

As for the fire question, I did raid with Fire and my experiences weren't exactly as good as they have been with Arcane, that said, it would never take me a long time to read up on talent builds and get back into Fire, I guess one of the real reasons I've held using my second Spec Slot for something useful in a raid situation is mainly because of the Arcane Spec buffs coming soon. I guess if truly needed I could always scrap my Frost Spec.

Marignome:

I'm sure it does.

Tightbriefs:

I guess I can try switch up the dates on which I raid, staying within the main days of raiding and gearing up Wednesday's, I suppose I can swap around the rest days to less important dates in the week. I am a very competent with raids and have a great deal of patience and time to learn new boss fights, and believe me when I say I learn fast. I am also a very active player, maybe too active on days, and I like to be committed. If doing 25 page in-depth essays in one day, from morning to night isn't committed, I don't know what is.

Subeam:

The 1 point into Arcane Stability then going to talk about slow sentence is rather confusing, but I'll try answer what you're asking about. I guess outside of raid situations, or in heroics, it's really fun to be able to kite things around for whatever reason, and not to forget Torment the Weak. I guess in a raid situation as it stands, it is rather useless. As for Arcane Stability, from what I've read, the more pushback reduction you have, the more it increases your dps if for whatever reason you get hit by a raid-wide AoE. I guess I would put the extra point if I take it away from Slow would go into more Arcane Stability, unless you can suggest a better talent, which I can't really see going back and looking at my tree.

As for the Mage Armor question, looking back at my talents, I have Arcane Meditation, coupled with Mage Armor, which should give me 100% Mana regen un-glyphed (This is what happens when you don't look back and make revisions). I am also well aware of the mage Tier 9 2 Set piece bonus, which seems quite silly.

The Haste target has kind of stumped me too, it's just that I've come so far in terms of boosting on haste, that it would seem sad to let go right before 10%, which would round of my haste. Crit, as far as I know, has always come below Haste on terms of importance with Mages, or so I have read from multiple sources, and also that it isn't as Crit heavy as a Fire spec, for example.

I did in fact used to play Fire as mentioned before, but then switched to Arcane because back then, it was much easier to gear up, and I saw vast improvements in DPS at the time, although this may not be the case now, it's just stuck. I usually find that I out-DPS most people in terms of DPS in certain "Burn" phases (No pun intended, although I don't see how it's a pun if I'm not Fire specced).

Looking at my gems, Red sockets go with Spellpower, Yellow ones with Haste to meet my 10% target, and then I need 2 Blue ones for my rather troublesome Meta Gem, and what better way to do that then try to get as much Spell Power as I can from a Blue socket? I guess I could remove 1 Blue gem from my gear, and just slap in a Red gem, as I only need 2 Blues for my Meta to be active, revisions will be made later I guess.

You're absolutely right about crit being below haste, it's why i wondered why stop stacking haste at 10%. Wink
However, spellpower gives the highest dps per item point. Yellow sockets can be filled with a spellpower/haste gem.. when the socketbonus is worth it. Otherwise, i think you'll find a pure spellpower gem will give you more dps.

seems like subeam covered most of my questions.
Instead of glyph of mage armor, what glyph would u choose?

beeing a arcane mage without slow is bleh, it is a raid utility, and a small dps loss if you struggle to get range, or having pushback, and it could keep u alive a bit longer.. but as arcane is now, u get no fun talents, without nerfing ur dps, but slow i'd reccomend. for some encounters(freya->snaplasher HM)

Fire vs. Arcane: Stand still fight, Fire is quite allot better than arcane, specially with the 4 set, but as most fights requires more and more mobility, and burn phases, arcane gets the upper hand. 3s casts are no fun! while having fire, clouds, shadow crashes/voidzones, and mobs with low Hit Pool all around you!

maybe put your arcane stability point into magic attunement for extra range, or put another point into arcane subtley for the extra 20% threat reduction, for those quick burn phases mages excell at.

So I've logged in today and swapped out my old Mage Armor Glyph for a Mana Gem Glyph (It was really the only thing I could find at the time, and it does seem like a nice step up from the standard mana boost it gives) and respecced not to remove Slow from my arsenal of spells, but to take Fivedollah's advice of the extra 20% threat reduction. I've also swapped out a Blue gem for a Red one, and made other tweaks here and there.
